Old Muse - Monzy The Terrible & Blank Thought
Old Muse - Monzy The Terrible & Blank Thought

hey everyone, samsraps here.

just wanted to check in and share some updates, thoughts, etc.

first of all, love this project from Monzy and Blank. the more familiar i get with Monzy’s work, the more intertextuality i start to see between albums and songs. as always, the writing is top-tier and sends me to many different places in my mind’s eye. i would highly recommend checking out Monzy’s other work to get a fuller picture of them as an artist.

on my front, working on lots of music. just dropped ‘free associates’ with Coughy Bitters prod skelbeats on 9/8; finishing up an exciting EP with the SOSS GANG homies; and recording the last 3 songs for my upcoming album, Exit through the Fourth Wall.

personally, been playing hella pickleball lately as my baseball season comes to a close. it has been a fun game to learn as it combines many elements of tennis and ping pong, two games i have spent much time practicing. hanging out with my cats on the porch & taking in the crisp morning air of autumn.

hope you are all well & i hope you enjoy the post. peace.

OLD MUSE by Monzy The Terrible

THE LAST DE(S)CENT

The last thing you remember is the glare of headlights as you crested the blind hill.

Now you’re plummeting with some unknown figure at your side. Not quite skydive instructor. Not quite helping you fly though either, are they?

They turn to you over their shoulder as you fall headfirst into nowhere.

“First time, eh?

Don’t worry. We’ll be there soon.”

[GUABANCEX 1:29-1:49

You find comfort in the captivity […] It wasn’t much, though. The shackles were free. I heard the reaper keep askin’ for me […] Could’ve brought Lazarus back in a blink, but I’ll let the dead take back the lead]

“What the hell did you do to earn your way down here anyway?”

The Figure asks-

You question it silently.

Down where?? Where the hell are we going?

The piano comes in. Sound shouldn’t travel so far here but the dark chords reverberate through the space so quickly you think you may be falling through a chute. And the music is coming from down t h e r e.

Some sauntering mutters follow, but not clear enough to make out all of it. Just,

[Half Moon 1:15

It’s all murder if you’re counting crows]

You’re starting to see the bottom now. Just a shred of light pokes out from each side of the hole; shadows stretch and shrink against its circumference.

“They’re waiting,”

The Figure says with a smile.

The closer you draw, the louder the music becomes. Angry guitar strums shimmer one after the other until you’re bathed in the whole of the sound and not any one strum in particular. Thumping bass from afar. The shadows’ seemingly discordant poetry comes into clarity syllable by syllable.

[Town Crier (Snotnoze Saleem) 1:33 -

Consult me if you need a mental readjustment. These words cause spontaneous combustion. And the stocks plummet as a result of my rhetoric, engulf whatever I want]

“We’re here,” says The Figure, as you both float foot-first to the surface.

The shadows previously creeping from the edges enclose you until you’re submerged in darkness with the rest of them.

“Have fun,” chuckles The Figure.

Wait, you say. What the fuck am i supposed to do here? Where are we?

But they’re floating back up before you can make eye contact again. All you get is echoes.

[Sage 0:21

Those final words still hold weight.

I’m like “wait, wait, wait.”

I wake up and burn haze like it’s sage]

As the last shred of their being fades away, those dark piano chords come back one more time.

They’re all chanting around you now.
